About the Study

Purpose

The 2009 Community Hospital Replacement Study (CHRS) was conceived to advance the current state of industry knowledge regarding replacement hospital project strategy, design, finance, and execution.

Seventy-two community hospital replacement projects completed between 2000 and 2007 were identified and included in the CHRS. A comprehensive set of replacement hospital market, facility, operating, and financial metrics has been analyzed and compiled into the CHRS to provide hospital and community leaders with guidance regarding key issues:

  • What has been the industry experience with community hospital replacement projects?
  • How does post-replacement hospital performance compare with pre-replacement results and national results?
  • How do select market, project, operational and financial characteristics impact pre- and post-replacement performance?
  • How does my organization and project compare with the 72 replacement hospital projects included in the CHRS?

Photographs

Photographs below are of two replacement projects. They are also profiled as case studies in the publication: Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick, Maine and Platte Valley Medical Center in Brighton, Colorado.

Stroudwater Associates

Since 1985, Stroudwater Associates has differentiated its advisory services through action-oriented strategies that integrate operational, facility, financial, clinical, and strategic considerations. Healthcare is our exclusive focus. Our project-specific inter-disciplinary teams include: experienced clinicians, academics, system leaders, corporate officers, investment bankers, financial analysts, and content specialists, with an average of 17 years in healthcare each.

We serve a broad range of clients from academic medical centers, to community hospitals, to small hospitals, and to physician practices. Our consultants research, publish, and speak nationally on the most recent trends and technologies affecting the delivery of healthcare. Many serve as subject matter experts to organizations such as the Advisory Board, the American College of Healthcare Executives, and Estes Park. Most importantly, we do not re-frame client needs to fit pre-packaged solutions. Our clients are unique, so are our solutions.
